I don't know what it says about my art, but after hours of turning this into a full color illustration, I find that I really enjoy looking at the clean line drawing as a finished image.

Zombie ga ga ga a a a (...drool...mmm...brains)

Last week for the Rust Belt Monster Collective's topic was to design an outfit for Lady Gaga, and well...I drew her as a zombie. I believe that "zombie" counts as an outfit. What follows are soem process shots...

First up is my original sketch, kinda of a mess, but the idea works.

Next step, by using a couple multiply layers I fill in the colors and do figure out my values, I'm working  almost monochromatic, so the values are easier to distinguish. Next up I start painting over this layer, and you can see that  

RBMC Week13 Franken-Monkey!

For the week 13 challenge over at Rust Belt Monster Collective we all contributed to a jam piece for a poster for the anual Cleveland Drawn and Quartered event, where Cleveland area life drawing groups face off against each other in head to head (drawing) combat! So I drew a "Franken-Monkey" and his malicious maker!

RBMC week 11 sketch

This weeks challenge over at RBMC Central is to re-imagine an artistic masterpiece. I chose to use Ingres - "La Grande Odalisque" (1814), but you know instead of a turkish prostitue... I drew a sexy (If you're into that) robot chick!

So, in the spirit of any high school math test, I'm showing my work below, or you can skip all these shenanigans and check out the finished piece over here.

Greyscale values added to the original scanned sketch

Here I have the basic color for the image digitally painted, I do this by adding a "multiply" layer and a "color" layer over the grayscale image. I also re-cropped the image because I noticed that the original masterwork that I used for inspiration was more of a rectangle then my drawing, and I wanted to emulate that piece a bit more.

RBMC Remembering Moebius

This week on RBMC Blog we decided to dedicate the weeks topic to late great illustrator Jean "Moebius" Giraud. This drawing is of U.S. Cavalry Lieutenant Mike Blueberry, one of Moebius's many beloved characters. 

This drawing was done mostly with pitt brush markers on 18"x 24" paper. below are the pencil drawing and the final inked version. 

While I was drawing this I had an image in my mind of how I imagined it would look if this was one of Moebius's drawings, and I originally tried to emulate that imagined drawing, but I soon realized that such a thing was impossible, I can only draw how I draw, and I have to accept that. Once I did, I felt much beter about this drawing.

Ralph McQuarrie Tribute

And now for something I don't usually do ...Process shots! 

Yay! 

This is my initial sketchbook sketch of what I wanted to draw for this weeks RBMC blog tribute to the amazing concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. This sketch is very lose and fast and really just to get an idea out of my head and to warm me up for drawing.

Okay we're in photoshop now, I just started by laying down some color on a multiply layer over the line work,just to get a basic sense of what I want my color to be. After this I start modeling with color (or the hard/fun part if you will).

And now the part of the drawing were I pay for my laziness earlier in the process, I'm not happy with the composition and I remove Luke, also not being happy with Darth's pose I change that as well. This is easy enough to do in photoshop, but that's one of my bad habits, someday I hope to break.

RBMC: Supporting Character Lines

This is the original ink sketch for the "Supporting Character" topic over at Rust Belt Monster Collective (go there see cool art). Maybe Robin is a bit of an obvious choice, but he was pretty fun to draw, especially when he is about to take a crowbar to the Joker's face.

RBMC: Childhood Cartoons! Inky lines

This week's Rust Belt Monster Collective's topic was , to draw our childhood cartoons...and I had ...a lot, and I couldn't choose just one, so I went with: Godzilla, Voltron, Optimus Prime, Lion-O, Winston Zeddemore, He-Man, Donatello, video game Link, Slimer, and lil'old me in my kick ass Superman jammies' (with Velcro cape!), I still feel like I left a a bunch of favorites out (my bad Snake Eyes, Gonzo, Super Friends Batman, and Spider-man).

This is the finished "ink" art. I took the original scanned sketches and combined them in photoshop and cleaned (sort of) everything up.

   
This is the original inked drawing from my sketch book, you can almost see where I started to draw Donatello behind Lion-O and in  front of Voltron's lion foot. In this drawing he fits there well "compositional-ly", but for the finished drawing that I had in mind, I preferred him in his final spot.

Here is the original sketch of the kid, he was the first thing that I drew in this piece that i was happy with, but I realized that I didn't have enough room on the page for the rest of the drawing as I wanted it, so I erased him, but I scanned him before that so I could use him later (computers are cool),

Galactus Line work!

Last week's rust belt monster blog's topic was GALACTUS! I've never drawn him before so this was really fun, actually drawing anything that Jack Kirby designed is fun.
